2014 A&E Report: How the small and invisible is remaking real estate
Much of the built environment in our cities is surprisingly homogeneous: a collection of
boxes configured for work, play, and commerce. The boxes may vary in size a bit, and may
have different forms of mechanical systems connecting them, heating them, cooling them
and lighting them. The boxes may be decorated differently according the purposes, the
fashions and the design philosophy of the builders and owners, but they are all still boxes.
…and yet, under the surface, the way we build, use and finance those boxes are changing
quite a bit—creating new opportunities and new risks every day.
