Attendees are invited to reconnect with peers and create new connections at a networking dinner at Liberty Bistro, located at 225 Liberty Street through the Le District food court in Brookfield Plaza downtown.

8.45am Welcome comments & NAREIM Sustainability committee update

 

NAREIM Sustainability committee members will provide a short update on the industry, as well as key issues to be addressed through the following peer discussions.​​​​

9am Net Zero Efficiency & Resilience: Process, Assessments & Tracking Pt. 1

  • Speakers:

    • Anne Peck, Vice President, Head of ESG+R, TA Realty

    • Brooke Pottish, ESG Coordinator – Asset Management, New York Life Real Estate Investors

    • Chang Liu, Vice President, RE Tech Advisors 

In the first segment of this session, two member case studies alongside a consultant on what they are using to conduct asset level carbon assessments, building checklists for what it takes to get assets net zero aligned and how they scale the tracking and integrate that into traditional business procedures. ​

  • Format: 40-minute case study; 20-minute Q&A

10.15am Net Zero Efficiency & Resilience: Process, Assessments & Tracking Pt. 2 

Small-group activity: In the second segment of this session, members discuss which groups/departments within their company manage the decarbonization process with help through a RACI chart. 

Whole-room best practices sharing: Groups will compare and discuss ranking results, diving into key concerns pertaining to their current firm strategies. 

  • Format: 20-minute exercise; 25-minutes best practices sharing

11am How to Strategically Resource & Staff Sustainability Departments

  • Session leaders:

    • Hannah Tillmann, Vice President of Sustainability, Berkshire Residential 

    • Cassandra McFadden, Vice President, Global Head of Sustainability, Cortland

NAREIM members will compare and share strategies on what roles they adopt internally vs. what is better to outsource to consultants. 

Small-group activity: At roundtables, members will discuss with their peers and list out on whiteboards the top 3 responsibilities they outsource and top 3 they keep internally at their firms.

Whole-room best practices sharing: A representative from each group will sum up what their table discussed and the strategy behind the decisions. In addition, the groups will share their top concern for staffing sustainability based off what the tables have already shared from the activity. 

  • Format: 5-minute polling, 20-minute exercise; 35-minute whole room

Format: Open-mic session of best practices sharing, and discussion of challenges and lessons learned.

    • Jill Brosig, Managing Director & Chief Impact Officer, Harrison Street Real Estate Capital

  • Speaker:

    • John Adler, Chief ESG Officer, NYC Office of the Comptroller​

 

How are you able to simultaneously incorporate client demands and expectations, regulatory requirements, and fiduciary responsibility into your ESG strategy? Members discuss strategies to prioritize and measure the value of ESG efforts.

 

Some questions to be raised include:​

  • How is your firm incorporating new rules, regulations, and net zero commitments?

  • How much of a pushback has there been to implementing ESG strategies?

2.45pm Lessons from the Trenches: Improving Sustainability Data Capture

  • Session leaders:

Members discuss establishing a baseline for stronger owner to tenant engagement, strategies to better engage utility providers, and methods to boost communication between LP and GP expectations. 

 

  • Some questions to be raised include:

    • What are you bringing to your tenants in terms of information and goal sharing?

    • How do you bridge the divide among key stakeholders?

    • What tenant engagement tactics do you use to get access to the data?

    • What is the role of utilities vs. asset managers or owners?

    • What is the greatest lesson you’ve learned throughout your data capture journey?

 

Format: 15-minute manager case studies; 30-minute Q&A and whole room discussion
