Most impactful DEI policy? Talking to employees

DEI Survey 2022: deep dive into the data

December 19, 2022

Communicating DEI and its importance to employees is the most impactful policy you can adopt when it comes to diversity, equity and inclusion, according to the Global Real Estate DEI Survey 2022.

The Survey, released last week, asked more than 190 organizations to list their most impactful DEI policies with organizations responding with 60 key strategies they employ to progress DEI within the workplace - and ranking their importance.

In ranked order, Survey respondents said the top 5 most important strategies were:

  • Employee communication and communicating the importance of DEI to the workforce

  • Offering programs that provide a work/life balance (e.g., childcare, flexible work arrangements)

  • Ensuring there are individuals from underrepresented groups in the candidate pool before making a hiring decision

  • Evaluating employees based on well-defined, pre-determined criteria (job performance reviews)

  • Creating scholarships/internships to increase the number of underrepresented individuals in candidate pools

The full list of 60 policies, ranked by Survey participants as to their impact, can be accessed here.

The DEI Survey 2022 brought together participation from 192 unique organizations which provided 210 submissions detailing their DEI practices in North America (81.4% of respondents), Europe (12.4%) and Asia-Pacific (6.2%). Data was collected between July 28 and October 7, 2022, with the Survey released in December 2022.

Produced in association with ANREV, INREV, Ferguson Partners, NAREIM, NCREIF, PREA, REALPAC and ULI, the full Survey results and accompanying data packs were emailed directly to participants from Ferguson Partners. To access an executive summary of the DEI Survey 2022, click here.
